Classic Singapore-style Wanton Mee

Contrary to what the verb “wanton” implies, this bowl of noodles is inviting and welcoming. Wanton mee is the Singaporean adaptation of wonton noodles. Wanton, the cantonese word for 云吞(dumpling) and mee, the hokkien word for noodles. It is exactly as the name implies, a bowl of noodles with dumplings.

This bowl of Wanton mee is most easily recognized by the strong fragrance of heibi hiam (shrimp chili paste) as a base in the noodles’ gravy. One whiff of it is sure to set off your appetite. The noodles are firm and springy, coated in a light layer of oil that brings out the flavour of the combination of ingredients, as light, inviting, and delicate. Unlike other styles, this set of flavours don’t feel too overwhelming or bold, instead, lightly tickles your tastebuds in just the right way.

The fried wantons are crispy, with just enough filling. Seasoned well to add a savoury crunch to the noodles. The char siew is mildly sweet and dry, which complements the noodles and gravy. Served with a bowl of soup and green chili, the ensemble is hearty and whole. $3 for a bowl of wanton mee (soup wantons), $4 for a bowl of fried wanton mee, and additional 50 cents if you want a larger serving of noodles.

While there are many different styles of Wanton Mee in Singapore alone, it is hard to say which style is the best. I ‘ve had many since I was young and I would say they are different, but not necessarily better or worse.

This stall is tucked away in an Hougang Avenue 1 carpark, which is also accessible by Lorong Ah Soo, this (once rustic, recently renovated) stall in a kopitiam is a crowd pleaser, as quite often the bowls from this stall are on most tables. The menu also offers a variety of noodles with different ingredients such as shui jiao (shrimp dumplings, soup & fried) and shredded chicken hor fun and more.

While not the best or the most impressive, I do find myself craving this particular stall’s wanton mee from time to time, even if it is quite out of the way. I especially recommend this stall if you are the sort who prefers the old style- a simple chili paste and oil instead of wanton noodles that are slathered in soy sauce/chili/ketchup. The stall’s service is fast and usually serves to your table.

Fancy a 21-Inch Wood Fired Pizza?

21-Inch Wood Fired Pizza from Peperoni Pizzeria

It’s hardly my first time at Peperoni Pizzeria. ever since I chanced upon it about 5 years ago, I’ve been to multiple other outlets and never disappointed by the steaming hot, aromatic food they serve up. The only thing that annoys me is that I haven’t tried out too many of their menu items, because every time I dine there, it’s impossible for me to resist the allure of the 21-inch, flat pizza baked in their wood fired oven.

Pizzas

While they offer a wide variety of preset toppings to Select from, and the option of going half-and-half  on a pizza, my all time favourites have got to be the Quattro Formaggi  (Mozzarella, taleggio, scamorza & gorgonzola cheese) for the first, and Prosciutto Crudo di Parma (parma ham with rocket salad) for the second, as shown in the picture above.

Other toppings include Salmone (Fresh salmon, caramelized onions & capers), Pancetta (Cured bacon, sliced tomatoes & egg), and Frutti di Mare (Prawns, clams, scallops, squid rings, fish & garlic).

If no meat is your thing then you might prefer Vegetariana (Shitake, artichoke, zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers & black olives) or Verdurine é Funghi (rockets, cherry tomatoes, gouda cheese, caramelised onions, porcini & button mushroom).

The crust is always crisp on their pizzas, big or small. Powdered lightly with flour, it stains your fingers after you pick them up, but one bite of the pizza and you’ll not mind the powder. Unlike most chain-pizza franchises, the pizza here doesn’t overflow with melted mozzarella sitting atop a reservoir of tomato sauce. The base is layered just the right amount of cheese, not too much that it strings as you pull, but enough to keep the delicious, savoury flavour. Complemented by strips of salty parma ham, mildly bitter rocket and flakes of sharp parmesan, this pizza brings a unique group of flavours together that taste very light, but extremely enjoyable.

Quattro Formaggi, 4 cheese

The Quattro Formaggi is quite the opposite of the Prosciutto Crudo di Parma. Unlike the delightful, light delicate flavour of the former, the 4 cheese is loud and boisterous. The flavours of the different cheese are melted together to forge a supple texture with a sweet, rich, sinful and tangy taste, making not helping yourself to a second helping quite a challenge.

In my experience, a XXL size is just nice for 3 adults, if you’re not getting any mains.

Mozzarella Fasciata Con Prosciutto

 

Mozzarella Fasciata Con Prosciutto (Pan-fried mozzarella wrapped in parma ham $18) was 3 delightful dumplings, glazing on the outside, with liquid mozzarella oozing out, accompanied by rocket salad with a balsamic dressing. The combination goes well together, the salty ham, the rocket salad and balsamic dressing, which admittedly is similar to the pizza topping, but certainly not inferior. A plate of 3 for $18 is a pretty steep pricing, but is justified when you taste it, leaving you wanting more.

Garlic Bread, Thin, Toasted, Tasty

Garlic Bread, $5. 4 Slices of garlic bread, not too thick, not too thin. The flavour is delectable, An appropriate appetiser to start the meal with.

I’ve been to several of their outlets over the years and have always enjoyed the food. The restaurants are family friendly, but also viable as a romantic dinner date location. The food is always up to par with their standards, the service is usually fast and friendly, sharp to look out for when you need a plate cleared or your drink refilled. Iced and warm water is served FOC. I find the prices are very reasonable . Although a little bit on pricey side, but is the food, drinks and ambience certainly make it a worthy dine.
